WordPress has released version 4.5.1 which fixes some bugs, increases security, etc. Unfortunately, this update seemed to break things with themes that are outdated.
The update is being rolled out automatically by many hosting companies (include ours, Flywheel). We noticed it caused quite a few sites to break, e.g. Google maps and videos were loading, images that had a “slide in” animation weren’t loading, etc. Our tech team has gone through our customer websites, checked them for anything that was wrong, and updated the themes for those sites, which seemed to do the trick.
We charge more for hosting and maintenance, but the benefit of this model is our customers covered when things like this happen. If you have a WordPress site without a maintenance contract, make sure your site is working properly, and if it’s not, you’re in for a surprise bill, and it may take your developer awhile to get to you if numerous sites broke in his or her portfolio.
